ATLANTA'S V103 UNITY MIXER!!
L.T. Dinwiddie
Atlanta’s popular radio personalities Frank Ski and Wanda, from the Frank Ski and Wanda Morning Show, are embarking on a new journey. In commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday they, along with Q100’s Bert Morning Show, have decided to throw the first "Unity Night Mixture". An event that is focused on breaking the racial divides of Atlanta's up and coming metropolitan social scene.
If you live here in Atlanta you can’t help but observe the fact that though this city is taking over today’s music scene and is steadily becoming the "New York" of the south. The self-segregation is extremely palpable. Unlike other booming cities like Miami or NYC where Blacks, Whites, Gays, and Straights all party together. The jewel of the south still hasn’t seemed to evolve with the rest of the country in terms of how they party and socialize.
Could it be that though this city is considered a booming metropolitan — many residents have still adopted the old adage that the South is still one of the most racists region in the United States today? Or could it be that the Metro-Atlanta area, though enriched with diversity, is still surrounded by what many believe to be, much bigger and more racist counties such as Forsyth, Cobb, and Clayton. Being an Atlanta resident for almost two years now, I cant help but feel that living here has taken me two steps back in regard to race and race relations.
While, racism still exits in most parts of this country. I have never seen it to extent that I have witnessed it locally. Despite that fact, as a people we have a lot to work on racially. This Unity Night is a positive step in the right direction. Congratulations V103. I hope the event is a success.

1 Comments:
The event was a commercial success, but as a "unity" party, it was a failure.
White people for the last 15-20 years have had to deal with blacks coming in and taking over all the cool "spots" in town after a few months. What was once a cool place with good house or lounge music (where you can do lines of blow out in the open) turns into a hip-hop club where you have to get wanded to even enter (and forget doing lines on the table). Was one unity party supposed to make up for all of this? Right or wrong, by not showing up, whites expressed their frustration.
