See, you try to do something good and sometimes it can backfire on you. The internet is all a buzz over Oprah’s new academy for girls in South Africa. According to published reports cell phones and email are not allowed during the week, parental visits need to be approved by the school at least two weeks in advance, and the maximum number of visitors per pupil is four.
Parents are also not allowed to bring junk food items for their children.
I don’t see what the big deal is. If you know anything about private schools, then you know the main reasons they are private are because they have high standards scholastically and personally. And lets not for get this is South Africa where violence and war can happen at a moments notice (I’m assuming). Do you want a cell phone or an free education on a prestigious campus? Let’s prioritize people!
Since this negative press has seemed to overshadow the talk show queens good efforts a satellite meeting between Oprah and the parents was abruptly canceled last week. FULL STORY

I totally agree with you! These girls have been chosen to get a wonderful education and a chance a promising future that they wouldn’t get if not chosen. Africa is hostile and if you watch the tv special and saw where and how the girls where living the girls and their parents ought to be very humble at what Oprah is doing for them instead of spreading bad media about her.
I like you site and appreciate your explicit assumption.
For the record, wars are not common in South Africa. There was political and social unrest during Apartheid but that was before the early to mid 90s. Please correct your statement before some of your readers, particularly Blacks, begin to classify all African countries as war grounds.
I'm have visited twice without seeing any war or the like.
Summer,
Africa is a continent. My God is amazes me at how folks want to classify an entire continent or even country as hostile. I'm sure the 9th Ward is hostile, the Bronx, South Central, a few blocks in your city, parts of Europe, Asia, whatever....as an African American, I would like non-native Africans to think before they write something ignorant.
