Oprah Winfrey Shocking Special Report
Yesterday I watched in complete shock as Oprah explored poverty in this country. Following the devestation of Hurricane Katrina, it has blown the lid off of America's dirty little secret. Oprah decided to explore what poverty means in this country. I like she was shocked to dicover that 70 miles from Chicago a small township Pembroke Illinois doesnt even have a zip code, nor do they have running water. It is estimated that there are 37 million people in this country who are either at the poverty level, or right below it. What I find appauling is that we are so concerned about defending other countries rights and freedoms, yet we cant even focus on our country. The country that is supposed to be the most powerful nation in the world, and the most richest. The one thing that I found to be intresting was that Oprah didnt just focus on black poverty. She explored all of poverty. Poverty doenst have a color, or an age range. As uneducated as it sounds when I think of poverty or the poor. I think of Black people, my people in that struggle. I dont think of white people in that struggle. Watching that show has seriously impacted my life. This is a government issue, as well as person to person issue. No longer will I walk pass someone who is less fortunate then myself and cast judgement. Thats not my place and I finally realize that. It is my place to educate, uplift, and assist as much as I can. I encourage all of us to get involved, and change our thinking so that we can help each other. The time is now.......
