Vibe Awards Announced, Ciara, Kanye, Mariah Lead
The nominees for the 2005 VIBE Awards have been announced with Ciara leading the nominations, which include Kanye West, Mariah Carey and John Legend.
Ciara received a total of five nominations after the honors were announced on Monday.
Ciara, Carey, Legend, 50 Cent and West will compete for Artist of the Year.
The coveted Album of the Year category, expected to be equally competitive, includes John Legend’s Get Lifted, Kanye West’s Late Registration, The Game's The Documentary, The Emancipation of Mimi by Mariah Carey and Lil’ Kim's opus, The Naked Truth.
50 Cent, Kanye West, Ludacris, T.I., The Game are up for Rapper of the Year, while Boyz N Da Hood, Cassidy, Juelz Santana, Mike Jones and the aforementioned T.I. are contenders for this year’s “Street Anthem.”
This year’s show was in jeopardy after a man struck producer Dr. Dre as he went to accept a lifetime achievement award at the Vibe Awards in 2004.
Vibe publisher Kenard Gibbs told Billboard that he forged ahead after a groundswell of support.
"For obvious reasons, it was up in the air at one point," Gibbs said. "Everyone was very concerned as to what would be the fallout of something like this. But after conversations with UPN, our advertisers and the record community, we found everyone was committed to supporting this platform."
